John F. Kennedy Federal Office Building

Exemplifying 1960s modern architecture, the John F. Kennedy Federal Building in Government Center is located next to Boston City Hall. It contains two high-rise 26-story towers and a building with four stories. Walter Gropius designed the complex. Following President John F. Kennedy's assassination in 1963, officials decided the building, located in JFK's home city, should be named after him.

The tall towers coupled with the lower building is a feature typical of modern architecture in the U.S. and throughout the world. By virtue of the complex having two towers, there is more natural light. The double towers also serve to reduce the visual impact that a single building on its own would otherwise have.
