Gaia, for jazz quartet and orchestra

This tribute concert commemorates the life and enduring influence of the esteemed jazz trailblazer, composer, orchestra leader, and saxophonist Wayne Shorter, who departed in March 2023. The event showcases performances by five veteran collaborators of Shorter, making their debut with the BSO. Among them is the Grammy Award-winning bassist and vocalist Esperanza Spalding. Notably, Spalding penned the libretto for Shorter's 2022 opera "...(Iphigenia)," premiered in Boston in 2021, drawing inspiration from the ancient Greek tragedy by Euripides.
