Stay Fit This Summer: Free Outdoor Fitness Classes in Boston


Boston truly maximizes its limited warm weather with a plethora of outdoor activities, including a variety of free fitness classes. Grab your yoga mat and head to Seaport Common, the Greenway, the Frog Pond, and other scenic spots for daily classes throughout the summer. Here’s a guide to what’s on offer, where to go, and how to join in.

Seaport Sweat

May 1 — Sept. 28

Returning for its ninth season, Seaport Sweat is Boston’s largest free fitness series. Running from May 1 to September 28 at Seaport Common, this year’s lineup includes both veteran and new instructors. Enjoy pilates on Mondays, yoga on Tuesdays, power sculpt on Wednesdays, Zumba on Thursdays, and special classes like Broncore Bootcamp on select weekends. Stretch and the City

May 3 — Sept. 27

New to Seaport Sweat is "Stretch and the City," taught by Therlande Louissaint. This class combines yoga-like stretching with invigorating cardio every Friday at noon from May 3 to September 27 at the Summer Street steps (400 Summer St.).

Boston Parks Fitness Series

May 5 — August 31

The Boston Parks and Recreation Department, sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield, presents its annual fitness series from May 5 to August 31. Daily classes are offered across Boston, from Southie to Charlestown to Roslindale. Highlights include "Kick It by Eliza" on Mondays at 6 p.m. at Brighton Common, Zumba on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. at JP’s Mozart Street Playground, and yoga by the Frog Pond on Thursdays at 6 p.m. All classes are free, but registration is required.

The Greenway Fitness Program

June 3 — Nov. 10

The 10th season of the Greenway Fitness Program, also sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield, runs from June 3 to November 10, offering over 200 free fitness classes on the Rose Kennedy Greenway. The program includes yoga, pilates, and dance. Kick off the season with the “Workout with The Greenway Fair” on Thursday, June 13, from 4 to 8 p.m., where you can meet instructors and sample classes.
