Explore Boston's July 4th Fireworks, Events & Shows 2024

Boston hosts a plethora of activities during the 4th of July weekend, with the highlight being the expansive Boston Harborfest spanning July 1st to 4th, 2024. Known as the largest Independence Day celebration in the country, Harborfest features historical reenactments, lively artillery parades, scenic boat tours, an eclectic arts market, and a rich tapestry of music and entertainment. Spread across Downtown Crossing, Christopher Columbus Park, and Rose Kennedy Greenway, the festival kicks off with a festive opening ceremony at Downtown Crossing on July 1st at noon. The ceremony includes a mobile reenactment aboard the USS Constitution and a spirited performance by the Massachusetts 215th Army Band, followed by a ceremonial cake cutting by city officials.

The festival boasts a diverse entertainment schedule, including Christopher Columbus Park Activations on July 2nd and 3rd starting at 1 pm, offering a myriad of child-friendly activities. One of the highlights is the beloved Chowderfest on July 3rd at 2 pm, where visitors can sample delectable seafood chowders from local restaurants.

On July 2nd, Harborfest dazzles spectators with a spectacular fireworks display at 9:15 pm, launched from a barge at Long Wharf and visible throughout the Inner Harbor. The excitement culminates on July 4th with Boston's official Flag Raising Ceremony at 9 am in City Hall Plaza, followed by a poignant parade that stops at historic landmarks like Granary Burying Grounds and the Old State House, where the Declaration of Independence was first proclaimed in 1776. At 10 am, the Declaration is reenacted from the Old State House balcony by the current Captain Commanding of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company. A highlight of the day is the majestic voyage of the USS Constitution from Charleston to Castle Island and back.

The grand finale of Boston's celebration is the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular on July 4th, presented by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Commemorating its 50th anniversary, this cherished event features free performances at 8 pm at DCR Hatch Shell along Charles River Esplanade, with live broadcasts on WHDH and Bloomberg TV. The night crescendos with a dazzling fireworks display along the Charles River banks at approximately 10:30 pm.

Beyond Boston, neighboring communities contribute to the festive spirit. Somerville kicks off celebrations on June 27th with its Firework Spectacular at Trum Field, featuring live music performances and local favorite DJ Philip Tan. Just south of Boston, Braintree hosts Braintree Day on June 29th at Braintree High School, featuring a Stars & Stripes Parade, live music, family-friendly activities, and concluding with a captivating fireworks display at 9:30 pm.
